How to interpret the results

It is important to note that average speed varies with distance: the longer the race, the slower the speed tends to be. For example, comparing a marathon (42.195 km) to a 100 meter race, the marathon is 421.95 times longer. However, the ratio of the times will be much higher.


If we take as a reference the world-class times of 2 hours and 35 seconds for the marathon and 9.9 seconds for the 100 meters we see that:

- The average speed for the 100 meters is 1.73 times faster than that of the marathon.

- The total time of the marathon is 731 times longer than that of the 100 meters.

This comparison highlights how speed does not increase linearly as distance decreases. Use the calculator to compare your performances and get useful data for your race analysis!

    Example:

    In Race A, 1000 meters are covered in 4 minutes. In Race B, it is 5000 meters in 25 minutes. So the average speed in Race A was 13.33 kilometers per hour and in Race B it was 12 kilometers per hour. The following is a comparison output:

    The distance A was 0.20 times as far as distance B.

    The time A was 0.16 times as long as time B.

    The speed A was 1.25 times as fast as speed B.

    The distance B was 5.00 times as far as distance A.

    The time B was 6.25 times as long as time A.

    The speed B was 0.80 times as fast as speed A.
