Hiking Calculator
The calculator helps determine the estimated time and average speed for a hike. The data is based on the DIN 33466 standard, which applies to normally trained adults. Key points:
- Personal Performance:
- Altitude difference per hour ascent: - Default values are 300m/h for ascent.
- Altitude difference per hour descent: - Default values are 500m/h for descent.
- Distance per hour: - This is the speed that can be sustained on flat ground during a hike. About 4 km/h for mountain hikes.

- Personal Performance: - Modify "Personal Performance" parameters based on personal ability or group capability.
- Trail Running Data:
- Altitude difference ascent: - It is the sum of the uphill elevation changes.
- Altitude difference descent: - It is the sum of the downhill elevation changes.
- Horizontal distance: - It is the sum of the flat sections.
- Total distance: - It is the total distance walked.
- Rest per hour: - A default break of 5 minutes per hour is considered.
- Terrain factor: - Also adjust the difficulty of the terrain. The factor (e.g., 1) means you move at the theoretical speed.
Trail Running Calculator
The calculator can also estimate time and average speed for a trail running race:
- Personal Performance:
- Altitude difference per hour ascent: - Experienced athletes can climb between 600m and 800m per hour or more.
- Altitude difference per hour descent: - Experienced athletes can descend between 1000m and 1200m per hour or more.
- Distance per hour: - This is the speed that can be sustained on flat ground during trail running. Adjust the "Distance per hour" to around 10 - 12 km/h or more.

Factors to Consider
- Difficult Terrain Factor: - A higher terrain factor (e.g., 2) means you move at half the theoretical speed.
- External Circumstances Not Considered:
- Weather conditions
- Additional breaks
- Obstacles on the trail
- Extra Time: - Always allocate extra time to avoid getting caught in the dark.
- Personal Preparation: - Carry enough water, food, sunscreen, and proper equipment.
Safety & Progression
- If unsure about stamina/difficulty: - Start with shorter and easier routes.
- Gradually improve as you gain experience.

First, choose the calculation with the Metric System or the Imperial System.
Enter the necessary data with the units of the Metric System or the Imperial System.
Adjust your "Personal Performance".
Check "Rest per hour" and "Terrain factor".
Enter at least "Horizontal distance" because "Horizontal distance" is mandatory.
Now calculate the time and average speed.
