The waist-to-hip ratio (WHR) is an anthropometric index that measures the proportion between the circumference of the waist and that of the hips.
The BMI was created in 1832 by the Belgian mathematician and statistician Adolphe Quetelet, who, through anthropometric studies, observed that weight increases with the square of height19. The physiologist Ancel Keys then took up this indicator in the 1970s, calling it "Body Mass Index" and using it in studies on obesity.
